Why cutting to size matters
Structural sections are rolled in long standard lengths. A domestic opening rarely needs anything close to that, so somewhere between the mill and the wall the steel has to be cut. The question is only whether that happens under controlled conditions before delivery, or on site with a disc cutter.
Cutting before delivery is faster, safer and tidier. There is no cutting noise or sparks in an occupied house, no dust in a room that has just been cleared, and no offcut to get rid of afterwards. On a terraced street where the beam has to be carried through the building, a beam already at its finished length is also a great deal easier to handle than one that is over-long.
Getting the length right
The length on the structural drawing is usually the clear span plus the bearing at each end. Getting that wrong in either direction is expensive: too short and the beam does not have enough bearing on the padstone, too long and it does not drop into the pockets.
If your engineer’s drawings show the bearing dimensions, send them and we will work from those. If you are working from site measurements, measure the opening and tell us what bearing the calculations require at each end rather than adding an allowance yourself.
What we need from you
A cutting list is enough if you already know the sizes and lengths. Otherwise send the engineer’s drawings or calculations and we will read the sizes and lengths off them, work out quantities, and come back with a price for the steel cut and ready.
Tell us at the same time if the beam also needs holes, cleats or a finish, because it is all done on the same order.

Can you cut to any length?
Beams are cut to the lengths you specify. Send the cutting list or the drawings and we will confirm what is possible for the sizes involved when we quote.
Do I pay for the full length or just what I need?
You are quoted for the steel you have ordered, cut to your lengths. Send us the list and we will price it.
Can you cut beams that also need drilling?
Yes. Cutting, drilling, welded connections and finishes are all arranged on the same order so the beam arrives ready to install.
Does cutting affect the beam structurally?
Cutting a beam square to length does not change its section properties. Cutting into the web or flanges is a different matter and must follow your engineer’s details — see our drilling and notching page.
