A structural engineer will give you a size, and that size is the one to order. But it helps to understand what the steel is doing before the calculations land — what governs the size, what else the beam will need doing to it, and what to have ready when you ask for a price.

A loft conversion turns a space that was never designed to be lived in into a room that has to carry people, furniture and a staircase. Steel is usually how that happens.
