What it is used for
Portal-framed industrial buildings need base plates under every stanchion, and the sheds around Basildon and Grays are where most of the heavier plate goes. Chequer plate follows the same buildings as access covers, walkway panels and step treads. On the residential side, Essex work generates a steady run of padstone spreader plates where a beam bears onto older masonry, and the county has a lot of that: Victorian and inter-war stock through Colchester and Southend where the wall below a new opening is not as sound as the drawing assumes.
The thing worth getting right
Base plates are where this matters most on domestic work. The plate spreads a column’s entire load into the foundation below, and its size and thickness come from the engineer’s calculations instead of by eye. Holding-down bolt positions have to be agreed before concrete is poured, which is the single most common thing to go wrong on a small steel frame.
Delivery across Essex
We deliver direct to site across Essex, including Colchester, Chelmsford, Basildon, Harlow, Brentwood, Braintree, Southend-on-Sea, Rayleigh, Grays and Clacton. A lot of what goes into Essex is estuary and industrial work around the Thames corridor, alongside steady residential development inland.
Essex splits into two very different delivery problems. The A12 and A13 corridors and the estuary industrial areas around Grays and Basildon are straightforward for a full-length load. The older parts of Colchester, the coastal roads out to Clacton, and a good deal of Chelmsford are not, and a 7.6 metre length is a genuine question there and not a formality.
HIAB lorry crane offload is available on request. If the approach is tight, tell us at quote stage rather than on the day and we will plan the delivery around it.

Common questions
Can you cut plate to size?
Yes. Plate is cut to the dimensions you supply, so it arrives ready to use instead of as a standard sheet needing cutting on site.
What is the difference between flat bar and plate?
Length against area. Flat bar is a long narrow section sold by the metre, used for straps, ties and brackets. Plate is a flat area cut to a shape, used for base plates, gussets and spreading load.
Do you supply chequer plate?
Yes, from 3mm to 12.5mm, for access covers, walkways and step treads. It is not a structural product and should not be specified as one.
Can plate be drilled and welded before delivery?
Yes. Holes for holding-down bolts and welded assemblies are both routine. Send the fabrication details with your enquiry and we will price it together with the steel.
Ready for a price?
Send your drawings or a cutting list and we will come back with quantities and a price. Large and small orders both welcome.
