What is a 127 x 76 x 13 used for?
The 127 x 76 x 13 is the smallest section in the UB range and sits at the point where a steel beam starts to make more sense than a timber or concrete lintel. It turns up most often in small internal openings, short trimmer beams around stairwells and loft hatches, and light non-structural or lightly loaded partitions. At 13 kg per metre it is also the only UB in common use that two people can reasonably lift and position by hand over a short length, which is why builders reach for it on jobs with no crane access and tight interior stairs. It is not a beam for spanning open-plan rooms or carrying floor loads over any distance. If your engineer’s calculations are pushing toward 3 metres or the beam is picking up a floor as well as a wall, expect to move up to the 152 x 89 x 16.
Indicative span
Under typical UK domestic loading, published load tables place the 127 x 76 x 13 in the region of 2m to 2.5m. That assumes a simply supported beam with an evenly distributed load, an imposed load of around 1.5 kN/m² and a dead load of 0.5–0.8 kN/m².
Grades, lengths and finishes
The 127 x 76 x 13 is normally supplied to BS EN 10025-2 in S275JR or S355JR. S355 is the higher strength grade and is increasingly the default across the supply network; if your calculations specify one grade, tell us, because the two are not interchangeable. Mill certificates can be supplied with the order on request.

We deliver direct to site across London, the South and the Midlands, with HIAB lorry crane offload available on request.
