What it is used for
Kent’s industrial and port buildings take the large base plates, along with the holding-down bolt assemblies that go with them. More distinctive here is the flat bar. Ragstone and flint walls around Maidstone and Canterbury move in ways modern masonry simply does not, so strap, tie and restraint plates are a routine part of opening one up, and the quantities add up fast on a whole-house job. Round bar goes out as dowels, tie rods and balustrade infill on the coastal conversions at Margate, Folkestone and Ramsgate.
The thing worth getting right
Base plates are where this matters most on domestic work. The plate spreads a column’s entire load into the foundation below, and its size and thickness come from the engineer’s calculations instead of by eye. Holding-down bolt positions have to be agreed before concrete is poured, which is the single most common thing to go wrong on a small steel frame.
Delivery across Kent
We deliver direct to site across Kent, including Ashford, Canterbury, Dover, Maidstone, Margate, Gillingham, Dartford, Chatham, Rochester, Tunbridge Wells, Gravesend, Folkestone and Ramsgate. Kent carries a lot of logistics and port-adjacent work alongside heavy domestic conversion in the Medway towns and the west of the county.
The M20 and M2 make most of Kent quick to reach, and the Medway towns and Ashford are easy enough for long lengths. Canterbury and Tunbridge Wells are the awkward ones, with narrow historic streets and restrictions that catch people out on a first delivery. Coastal sites at Margate, Ramsgate and Folkestone are usually fine but worth confirming.
HIAB lorry crane offload is available on request. If the approach is tight, tell us at quote stage rather than on the day and we will plan the delivery around it.

Common questions
Can you cut plate to size?
Yes. Plate is cut to the dimensions you supply, so it arrives ready to use instead of as a standard sheet needing cutting on site.
What is the difference between flat bar and plate?
Length against area. Flat bar is a long narrow section sold by the metre, used for straps, ties and brackets. Plate is a flat area cut to a shape, used for base plates, gussets and spreading load.
Do you supply chequer plate?
Yes, from 3mm to 12.5mm, for access covers, walkways and step treads. It is not a structural product and should not be specified as one.
Can plate be drilled and welded before delivery?
Yes. Holes for holding-down bolts and welded assemblies are both routine. Send the fabrication details with your enquiry and we will price it together with the steel.
Ready for a price?
Send your drawings or a cutting list and we will come back with quantities and a price. Large and small orders both welcome.
